HAPPY BIRTHDAY
FRANK ROSSETTI - DECEMBER 14
NELSON CHANG - DECEMBER 26
A fun time was had by at all at our annual Thanksgiving football banquet at Prince Restaurant in Saugus on Wednesday evening, November 18.
We had a great turnout which included Saugus & Peabody High School football senior players, coaches from both schools & dignitaries from both towns.
Jay Smolinsky did another fine job as our MC of the evening.
Thank you, also, to Greg Griffin & The Peabody/Lynnfield YMCA for the generosity & thoughtfulness in sponsoring the Peabody High Football team & coaches.
Our speaker for the evening was Roland James, who played for the New England Patriots for several years.
He was drafted by the Patriots in the 1st round of the 1980 NFL Draft (14th player selected overall).
In 1980 as a rookie, he started the first ten games as a strong safety, & became a nickel back for the final six games. He was second on the team with four interceptions & was the Patriots top punt returner in his rookie year with a 10.0 yard average as he returned 33 punts for a total of 331 yards (second best in the AFC).
He sparked the Patriots to a 34-21 win against the New York Jets on November 12, 1980 with a 75 yard punt return for a touchdown (longest punt return for a touchdown in 1980).
We also handed out the Saugus Heisman Trophy Award again this year.
Congratulations to Team Senior Captain Andrew White, a three year starter for Saugus, on receiving this award.
Congratulations to Saugus who beat Peabody in the Thanksgiving Day Game 14-6.
Don't forget to bring your pennies in for the Pennies For Sight drive.
Their will be a canister set up at every meeting for your donations.
Saugus Lions Club Flags are for sale . They are $ 5.00 a piece.
Every member should have one.
Just a reminder. The Saugus Lions Club donation box is up & running for all your extra eyeglasses, cell phones & hearing aides.
It is located at Currier Plaza on Hamilton St across from the Police Station.
Thank you to all fellow Saugus Lions that donated to our Toys For Tots Drive this year.
I know it was difficult with the way the economy has been.
Thank you to Gail Pelletier for all her work in running this wonderful drive every year.
At our meeting on Wednesday December 2, we had the privilege of having Saugus Fire Chief James Blanchard talk to us about the history of the Saugus Fire Department.
The first fire engine made in America was made at The Saugus Iron Works in 1653 by an Iron Master named Joseph Jenkes. It was commissioned by the City Of Boston in response to their first great conflagration that occurred January 14, 1653.
